Our project

Watch our redevelopment progressIn the summer of 2007 Toronto Rehab began a multi-million dollar capital redevelopment and expansion of University Centre at 550 University Avenue. The multi-year project will transform the former acute care hospital into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital with more appropriate and fully accessible facilities that will better serve the rehabilitation needs of patients and the community. The redevelopment will also create one of the world's most advanced rehabilitation research facilities (www.torontorehab.com/research/idapt.htm) that will bring together the brightest research minds and state-of-the-art technology to improve the lives of individuals recovering from, and living with, disabling injury and illness and age-related conditions.

uc after redevelopmentThe four-year project will involve:

  • demolition of an existing four-storey patient care south wing
  • construction of a new 13-storey patient care and research wing
  • renovations to the existing 12-storey east wing and four-storey north wing
  • improved entry/accessibility to the building for patients and families

The University Centre redevelopment project is part of Toronto Rehab’s ambitious capital redevelopment plan that began in 2003 with the construction of a new front entrance at University Centre, followed by the construction of a new 128-bed long-term care facility in Parkdale that opened in 2004 and extensive renovations at our Lyndhurst Centre in Leaside which were completed in 2007. A $10 million renovation of the E.W. Bickle Centre for Complex Continuing Care began in 2008.

Business as usual: Toronto Rehab will continue to deliver our high-quality specialized patient care services at University Centre during the redevelopment and renovation project.  Some services may move to other parts of the facility during the project, however, all services will continue to be provided on site.  We will do everything we can to keep our facilities as accessible as possible during construction.
