Enabling and Supporting Excellence
A solid infrastructure is an essential ingredient for organizational performance, and Toronto Rehab is actively involved in enhancing its technology, modernizing its physical facilities and expanding its financial resources in order to enable and support excellence in patient care, research and education.

Key successes in 2008/09

Information management
Considerable progress was made in implementing the hospital’s information management (IM) strategy that supports business continuity, improves efficiencies, ushers in electronic patient records and increases the accessibility and security of patient information.

Fundraising
Campaign posterThanks, in part, to the tremendous efforts of the Toronto Rehab Foundation, the hospital was able to continue implementing and sustaining its various strategic directions in 2008/09.

Specifically, the Foundation raised $2.2 million from over 4,000 donors last year, while its capital campaign – Everything Humanly Possible: The Campaign for Toronto Rehab – achieved its bold $60 million target shortly after the end of the 2008/09 fiscal year. Of the $60 million, $28 million was raised through the Everything Humanly Possible campaign, while the remaining $32 million came from a legacy campaign and from investment income. Details about the Foundation’s fundraising successes can be found in its Annual Report (click here to view).

Redevelopment and renovation
Rendering of redeveloped University CentreThe December 2008 groundbreaking ceremony for the University Centre redevelopment was a thrilling moment for everyone connected with Toronto Rehab.

This new 13-storey wing at the southwest corner of the University Centre property will further enhance therapeutic space for rehabilitation and recovery, provide dedicated space for education, and create a sophisticated environment for the most advanced rehabilitation research, including the iDAPT facilities. Meanwhile, the hospital also launched significant renovations at the E.W. Bickle Centre for Complex Continuing Care, as well as work at Lyndhurst Centre to improve facilities for patient care. To learn more about Toronto Rehab’s redevelopment, click here.

Renovations and Redevelopment
Initiative Performance Highlights
University Centre redevelopment

  • Construction of new south tower – adding new patient care, research and education spaces to University Centre – began in December 2008. Once completed, the existing east wing will be renovated, and Hillcrest operations will be consolidated at University Centre.
Bickle Centre renovation

  • Renovations to address patient and family satisfaction with the living environment began in August 2008 on Unit 3 North (first of several patient units).
  • During the work, concealed mould was discovered which, although not a safety concern in this instance, required work ‘rescoping’ to include mould removal and halting other planned renovations.
  • Funding being sought to reinstate the halted renovations and complete mould removal.
